Sparking woes

Postby Daniel on Mon Feb 08, 2010 10:18 am

I finally got that new ignition barrel, dash board/headlight ect are working. Now though there is no spark going to the plug through either kickstarting or button =/

I get a brand new battery in the last few days and made sure it was fully charged so i know thats not the problem. Whenever i try to start the engine warning light flashes for a few seconds, and additionally the neutral light wont indicate that the bike is in neutral. Im thinking the neutral light and no spark might be related since some bikes wont start if they think the bike is in gear but im not entirely sure. Maybe if i can trick the electronics to think the bike in neutral somehow?

Any ideas would be appreciated, im at my wits end here =/

Hi ya Daniel, assuming all the bikes fuses are ok, some bikes won't start if the sidestand is down!
Also, if it has electronic ignition, a lot of bikes have a fuse protecting the circuit.
Have you checked that the neutral lamp is not blown/broken ?.
And if it has a '' kill switch '', is it on/ working ok. :) Dave.

few things...is the bike turning over???

If so then it could be a few things...cdi not sending the signal tothe coil to fire, the coil its self. could be just a simple bad connection.

If its NOT turning over..check the side stand sensor, kill switch and the clutch switch on the left handle bar, simple micro switch. Dont know your model so some of these may not be on your bike.

Its an 07 ybr125, yep its turning over and iv checked and played around with the side stand switch and the micro switch on the clutch leaver. The original main fuse coming from the + lead was blown which was replaced, could there be other fuses elsewhere on the bike? cant see any in the user manual.
Iv sent yamaha chorley an email to ask em what they think, might shed some light on it.

ah one other thing i just noticed is that the headlamp seems to be stuck on low beam, if that's controlled by the on board computer as well as the ignition (fuel injected) maybe the computers gone a bit dodgy.

took the plug out put it back in the cap and grounded it close to the engine block, i presume i should see a small blue spark if it is sparking?

right ok then..as long as you had a good earth then ye you should see a spark. Spark plug...is it new....could be that simple!!!

start at the cheap fixes first...next trace the wires back from the kill switch...i think it should have a connector plug somewhere near the clocks..unplug it and try again with it unplugged

other than checking all the eletrical connections and that the coil is all connected....its hard not being there lol.

Dont think going to yammy dealer is the most...........economical fix though. no bike shops around near you?
